Online Imaging

It’s uncanny how many sets of people and circumstances have appeared in my life unexpectedly in the last 12 months.  Seemingly unrelated ideas and uninterested parties are now intermixing in many interesting ways.  I am crossing paths with old friends for the first time in years and also developing several new relationships both personal and professional.  This also seems to be happening in many of my techie areas of interest too.  Significant lessons from unexpected sources have aligned as I make various technical decisions that affect the future of my business.

Another significant area (though not as profound as “the future of my business”) is that of digital imaging.  In particular, my digital images. I recently decided to commit to using flickr.com for my main online photo site.  Committing involved becoming a Pro user by ponying up the $30 for a year of unlimited uploads, unlimited sets, and permanent storage.

The main things I like about flickr are it’s ease of use from my iPhoto app on my Mac and the social networking elements it incorporates. The flickr plugin for iPhoto makes it possible for me to organize, tag and upload tons of hi-res photos from within iPhoto itself. The social networking features I like the most are the comments, notification of my friends’ new photos, and the tags that reach across all of flickr. For some reason my bacon waffle photo has proven to be my most popular image.

I realized recently that I was stalled in my digital image organizing project because I did not have a place to go online. I had the cameras (current and future) picked out, I had the software on my computer, I had the external hard disk storage, I had the off-site storage of backups. It turns out flickr was the missing link to get me putting the finishing touches on my sets of photos that I have been organizing for a long time. Going forward, expect to see my new photos as I take them as well as sets of my older images. The last frontier for me will be digitizing many of my favorite pre-digital film images.
